Hebrews 4   "Rest" - Something we need; something we long for; something we are actually desperate for.. but often feel unable to grasp...

We are told that God Himself "rested" on the seventh day after completing His creation.  We are told that there is a "rest" that we need to enter into by faith.  The writer here even urges us to "be diligent to enter the rest" (v11).  So, how do we go about it?

The Greek word translated "rest" is katapausis - it means to settle down; to cease- to come to an end;  it is an abode - a place to live.

The Word tells us that "a promise remains of entering His rest" (v1)  Yet, we must be careful to not "come short of it".   The example of the Israelites in the wilderness is given - they "had good news preached" to them - A promised land; God, Himself dwelling with them; victory over their enemies; abundance of joy and peace and provision.  But, they didn't believe. They didn't obey. So, they could not enter His rest.

The word tells us that there is still good news for us...  "There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God." (v9)  It is for those "who have believed" (v3).  It is  "for the one who has.. himself also rested from his works, as God did from His."  To trust and obey - is still the only way we can truly enter His rest.  And it is God who enables us to do it.

He gives us the "word of God.. living and active - to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."  He sees us completely "...all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do."

He gives us "Jesus the Son of God", our great high priest, who can "sympathize with our weaknesses" and who brings us to "the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need."

Jesus said, "Abide in me"  Stay, endure, be present.. rest. " If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you."

Let the Word of God do its work in your thoughts and heart.  Surrender all the things you think are hidden from God's sight, realizing He knows it all anyway.  Trust in the One who has interceded on your behalf.  And come to the "throne of grace."

Father in heaven, how awesome it is that we can come boldly to Your throne - the exalted throne of heaven, surrounded by radiance and beauty, with worshiping angels and elders; in the midst of lightning, thunder and majestic glory - and find grace and receive mercy.  You have led us into Your rest through Jesus Christ in Whom we abide. Thank You, Lord.  Help us to hold fast, to be diligent, to stay, to settle down.. here.. in You.  Help us believe. Help us to obey.  We desire to "hold fast our confession"  - Jesus Christ is Lord.  It is in Him and by His Name that we come to seek Your face and Your help..  amen.
