Job 4-5  Eliphaz, Job's friend, is the first to speak to Job and give him his point of view. He gives us some things to think about here..

Verses 1-6  Eliphaz reminds Job of the many times he admonished, strengthened, and helped other people. Then he asks, "But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed."

Well, that touches a nerve, doesn't it? Many people are just like that.  We don't mind helping or correcting someone else.. but when the shoe is on the other foot.. well we don't appreciate that at all.

Eliphaz has a point... "Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty." (5:17)  David wrote in Psalms 141:5 "Let the righteous smite me in kindness and reprove me; it is oil to my head; do not let my head refuse it.. "   In other words.. when I am wrong and someone points it out.. let me listen and not become defensive and stubborn.  Let me accept God's discipline with humble repentance.

Even though this is not Job's problem.. it is still a truth that we can learn from.

Father in heaven,  we do not want to be blind to our own sinfulness.  Holy Spirit, bring Your light and shine it into our hearts.. Search us and reveal the attitudes and assumptions that we hold about our own lives that are not pleasing to You. Give us a spirit of repentance. Forgive us, we pray. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
