II Peter 3 Peter wants his readers to remember... remember the Word, and to remember that Jesus is coming again. The world doesn't believe that there is a day of judgement.. a time when we are held accountable for all that we have done. They mock our faith.. not knowing that it the patience of God that keeps them from being destroyed right now. "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." ( v9)
What a wonderful truth! Our God is patient.. wanting our salvation.. giving us time to grow "in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
But, there will come a day.. when the heavens and the earth will receive judgement. And that day will come, "like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up." ( v10)
Again, Peter reminds us to be "diligent". ... Eagerly desiring to be ready for that day when He returns. " Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness." (V11) He has promised us a "new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells." He wants us prepared.. spotless and blameless.. steadfast in the truth.
Father, help us keep our eyes on You... not forgetting that this world is only temporary.. our bodies are only temporary... for Your plan for us is greater.. it is eternal.. it is perfect.. it is marvelous! Father, thank You for patiently waiting for us.. for us to find salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord. We pray for those who have not believed yet.. asking for Your mercy that they might hear the Word and believe.. and receive Life eternal through Jesus Christ. Amen.
