 Genesis 1:20-23  Day 5  The first "living creatures" that God makes are the sea creatures and the birds.  He filled the sea and the sky. Then He "blessed them saying, ' Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on earth.' "

It seems that the Lord took a special effort to form the "sea monsters"..   Psalm 104:25-26 says "There is the sea, great and broad, in which are swarms without number, animals both small and great. There  ships move along, and Leviathan, which Thou hast formed to sport in it."

 He says to Job.. " Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a rope in his nose? Or pierce his jaw with a hook? Will he make supplications to you? Or will he speak to you soft words? Will he make a covenant with you?  Will you take him for a servant forever? Will you play with him as a with a bird? Or will you bind him for your maidens? Will the traders bargain over him? Can you fill his skin with harpoons, or his head with fishing spears? Lay you hand on him; Remember the battle; you will not do it again! Behold your expectation is false; will you be laid low even at the sight of him? No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse him...

Who then is he that can stand before Me?

Who has given to Me that I should repay him?

Whatever is under the heaven is Mine."  ( Job 41:1-11)

Some say this Leviathan is a whale.. others interpret it as dragon or sea-serpent... perhaps even a plesiosaurus.. an aquatic dinosaur. Whatever it was or is.. the Lord took care with it.. enjoyed it, even boasting of its strength and power..  and reveals His own greatness over all His creation!

Father, we stop to think again of the wonder of Your creation. We marvel at how magnificent You are.. You made the seas teeming with all kinds of fish.. the sky filled with all kinds of birds.  There is such variety and beauty to be found in the sea and in the sky.  Each creature formed by Your Word...by Your wisdom... for Your plans and purpose. We join the psalmist as we "praise the Lord!"

"Praise the Lord from the heavens
Praise Him in the heights.
Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!
Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all stars of light!
Praise Him, highest heavens, and the waters that are above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created. He has established them forever and ever;
He has made a decree which will not pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth, sea monsters and all the deeps...." (v1-7)

Amen!
