Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus went to Tyre and Sidon...on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea... outside of Israel.. in Syria/Phoenicia. A land of the Gentiles. It is not surprising that He would meet a Canaanite woman there. What is surprising is that this woman knew who Jesus was.. and that she called Him "Lord, Son of David".. What is also surprising is that Jesus would " not answer her a word."
The woman came because of her demon-possessed daughter. She came in desperation and in faith. She came.. not intending to give up.. even when Jesus didn't answer her at first.. or when He did answer but not the way she wanted. " I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
The woman asked for crumbs. She had no other hope but Jesus "Lord, help me!" she pleaded. Finally, Jesus answered her prayer.."O woman, your faith is great; be it done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed at once."
Jesus told the Israelites to "ask.. seek.. knock". He told them to keep asking..to ask in His name.. to trust that the Father knew what they needed and that He would provide. This Gentile woman is a living example of one who asked and kept on asking.. who sought Jesus and kept on seeking.. who knocked and waited until the door was opened. She is and example of true faith . She asked for a "crumb".. but received so much more.
Father help us to have this kind of faith.. to live with this humble desperation for the Savior. Even when we don't hear Your voice.. or feel that You are not going to answer.. may we keep on trusting and obeying and asking. Fill us with Your Spirit as we seek You today. In Jesus' name. amen.
